About This 1843 Historic Creole “Perique” Farm House In Paulina Louisiana
Turnkey house not far from New Orleans and Baton Rouge and a manageable size, dripping with charm. Historic Creole “Perique” Farm House, is named after the historic local tobacco crop famous in the area. This 180-year-old house is in almost pristine condition!!! The house sits on 4.25 acres that shares an edge with the mighty Mississippi River.
This classic beauty was built on the east bank of the river in St. James Parish around 1840 by a German Creole family. The house is a classic French Creole style with a three bay front and two rooms deep. Ceiling heights in the main rooms are 10’7”. The very large front porch looks out on historic River Road and the Mississippi River. Acquired by the present owner in 2006 and fully restored and sensitively renovated in 2008.
The owner performed the renovations with a discerning eye and was careful to preserve original materials and the overall integrity of the historic nature of the house. Central air and heat, a commodious modern kitchen, and two bathrooms were part of the remodeling. Historic “pieux” fencing was used to enclose the front yard and appropriate fencing was used in the rear yard. The total fenced area is approximately 2.2 acres, providing ample room for outdoor activities.
There are two sugar kettles in the front yard and a small cistern at the rear corner of the house are included in the sale. There is a small building that could be a potential guest house, and plenty of storage area, including a small storage shed. Perique is one hour from the French Quarter and one hour from Baton Rouge. Houmas House Plantation is a 30-minute drive, and Manresa is 10 minutes away. The home can be used for either full-time living or a weekend home retreat. Oak Alley and Laura Plantation are right across the river.
